BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WTAT-TV) — Authorities in Yemassee, South Carolina say they have arrested a woman who defrauded residents at a Beaufort-area apartment community.

Officials say Bertha Lee Owens, 53, was employed by the Beaufort Housing Authority and assigned to the Yemassee Heights Apartment complex off Castle Hall Road.

Investigators discovered Owens had been deceiving residents by collecting their rent payments, depositing them into her own bank account and then filed fake deposit slips to make it appear the deposits had been made.

We are told the incidents dated back to October of 2017.

Following an investigation, officers obtained an arrest warrant for Owens but she turned herself into authorities without incident. She was transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center to await a bond hearing.

If anyone believes they may have been defrauded by Owens they are encouraged to contact the Yemassee Police Department at 843-589-6315.
