Beware of Porch Pirates this Holiday Season
CHARLESTON, SC (ALEX HEATON, WTAT-TV) — It’s the time of year when deliveries ramp up. Trucks full of gifts rolling through your neighborhood, dropping off them off at your doorstep.
Often when you are not home.
Like in Hampton Park Terrace where one year ago neighbors came home to empty packages with the addresses torn off.
“That’s terrible to take people’s things,” a neighbor told us last December. “The stuff today was obviously a gift.”
All that was left – the cardboard boxes and a lot of questions.
David Ellsworth lives one street over. He has never had a package stolen but said some of his neighbors have.
“There are a lot of front porches here which are good targets for people,” he said. “I just think it’s an area where there is a lot of people walking around.
A year later, many of the homes now have doorbells with camera systems.
In fact, one woman came down just to see who we were because she saw us on her video system.
Another told us she chased a man down the street after she watched him snatch a package from her doorstep.
Still, others are taking precautions like these. Handwritten notes asking delivery drivers to be mindful too and hide the packages.
“Put it behind a chair or plant so it’s not so obvious from the street,” said Ellsworth.
And it couldn’t hurt to get to know your neighbors.
“We will have a neighbor come by and make sure they pick up the package so it isn’t on the porch for a long time,” he said. “We watch out for each other.”
