Charleston Ob/Gyn: The MonaLisa Touch
Dr. Lauren Hamilton with Charleston Ob/Gyn Aesthetics and Laser joins us to talk about a ground breaking new treatment called the MonaLisa Touch, which treats vaginal atrophy.
Dr. Hamilton, tell us a little about vaginal atrophy and what it is.
“Vaginal atrophy occurs not only in post-menopausal women, but also women who have had breast and gynecologic cancers. It’s a condition where estrogen levels are declining in the body and that causes and external discomfort as well as
Vaginal discomfort with things like intercourse.”
What are the traditional methods to treat this?
“Traditionally we used to use vaginal creams as well as pills, but a lot of women don’t want to take those because the do contain hormones and women sometimes don’t want to be on hormones and some cancers that they have are hormone contraindicated. “
As far as the MonaLisa Touch is concerned, how does the procedure work?
“So the patient is placed in the standard pelvic position and a probe is placed in the vagina. At the end of the probe is a laser. This laser causes microspores. This causes some healing which will eventually make the epithelium, which is the outside layer of the vagina, thicker. It will also cause increased lubrication inside the vagina bringing in blood vessels and nutrients in the external part , which is also called the vulva, will also have less irritation.”
What are the results of the treatment and who is eligible?
“The treatment consists of three treatments that are 6 weeks apart and last about 5 minutes each. It’s painless and there is no downtime whatsoever. Any woman who is having these symptoms is a candidate. The people who are not candidate are the women who have active infections, a history of radiation or who have mesh inside their vagina.”
