CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV & HEALTH FIRST) — Living in the Lowcountry affords us lots of time at the beach and at the pool.

Skin cancer has become one of the leading killers in the United States, and it’s also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. In order to protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun, protect yourself with sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing.

When you hear about protecting yourself from the sun, what people are really talking about is protecting yourself against the ultraviolet radiation (UV), that comes from the sun. Sunscreens come with an SPF number or Sun Protection Factor, which signifies the amount of protection you will get from the UVB rays of the sun. An SPF factor of 15 means that for every 15 minutes you’re in the sun you will be exposed to one minute of UVB rays. A sunscreen with an SPF 15 is the minimum protection level you should wear.

If you have been recently sunburned or are worried about a mole please come see us right away. One of our goals at Healthfirst is to help put your health first!
