Health First: Watch Out for Insects and Bug Bites!
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV & HEALTH FIRST) — Sometimes it seems like all the bugs in the world have nothing better to do than to snack on YOU! Thankfully, most stings just cause a bit of pain and swelling; bites typically cause annoying itchiness and ugly welts. Keep in mind, some insects can also carry disease, and others can trigger life-threatening reactions in someone who is allergic to their venom. One of our goals at Healthfirst is to help put your health first!
If you’re stung by a bee: Remove the stinger to promptly reduce symptoms. A credit card, or a dull knife works well to scrape the stinger out from the skin to prevent injecting the venom.
If you’re bitten by a tick: Pull the tick from the skin, slowly and straight up, using tweezers to grasp the tick as closely as possible to the skin to keep the body and head intact. Make sure to clean the area well with a disinfectant. Ice works well to reduce symptoms for both bites and stings, once the area has been cleaned. We put your health first.
