Child in Critical Condition After Accidental Shooting
MYRTLE BEACH, SC (DEEVON RAHMING, WPDE-TV) — The parents of a 4-year-old child who accidentally shot himself in a hotel room over the weekend appeared in court Sunday afternoon.
Heather Lyn Odom and Jeremy Jermaine Barrett sat in court with tears in their eyes as a judge read them their rights after being charged with unlawful neglect of a child.
“I just wanted to say that this was just a tragic accident and is something that shouldn’t have happened, but it did. And I just thank God that my son is doing okay,” said the child’s mother. “We’re good parents, we work, we both got jobs, I work two jobs and I’m going back to school in August as his dad was going back to school in August as well.”
Detectives say the family was staying at the Oceans One Resort in Myrtle Beach in a three-room suite when the 4-year-old shot himself in the head.
Now, he is fighting for his life in the hospital with swelling in his brain.
This is why Judge Clifford L. Welsh says he couldn’t bear to see the family and parents of the child suffer any longer.
“If things don’t go well, I know they are going to want to at least see their child,” he said during that hearing.
“They take care of themselves, they don’t ask for anybody for anything – they rely on themselves,” said one woman. “They are good people, it’s just something that happened.”
As family members pleaded with Judge Welsh on the parent’s behalf, the judge showed mercy as he set the conditions upon their release from custody.
“I’m gonna let you out on your own recognizance,” said Judge Welsh.
Leaving two families hopeful and praying as their little man works to recover after this horrific accident.
The parents are expected to appear in court in September. The 4-year-old remains in critical condition.
