Counterfeit Water Bottles Seized at Port of Charleston
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — Federal officers have seized several shipments of counterfeit water bottles from the Wando Welch Terminal.
Thousands of reusable water bottles were designed to look like the popular S’Well water bottles.
They were seized in five separate incidents over the summer.
We are told the haul came from China and each shipment was supposed to head to a distributor in California.
“By the time we discovered that the first shipment was subject to seizure, the other ones were already on their way in the supply chain, so we ended up quadrupling the seizure amount after we got the first container here,” said Brett Mueller, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Officers worry about the fake goods because they could pose a health risk.
More than 345,597 plastic and stainless steel bottles were confiscated totaling about $12,341,820.
