Dozens Expected to Protest Parking Meter Rate Hike
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — We are looking ahead to what could be a very loud Charleston City Council meeting this week.
Dozens of people are expected to protest a proposed plan to raise parking meter fees during Tuesday evening’s city council meeting.
Those who work or run shops in the downtown area say parking is already a challenge and this will just fuel frustrations.
Officials say they want to hike up costs to $2.00 an hour and extend enforcement hours from the current 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
They tell us the move will help cover the costs of new high-tech meters which are expected to be installed soon.
Parking will remain free downtown at the Battery.
