Fire Crews Respond to Massive Fire on Smith Street, Firefighters Sent to Hospital
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — Charleston Fire Crews responded to a massive fire at a home at 48 Smith Street Friday afternoon, just blocks away from another fire already in progress on the 100 block of Cannon Street.
When fire crews arrived to the Smith Street fire around 3:20 p.m., they reported a heavy fire condition at a very large, historic home.

Those in the home were able to get out, however a woman attempted to run back into the home to rescue a cat, but a firefighter was able to grab her. She was transported to the hospital, no word if she was able to retrieve that animal.
Two firefighters were also put on stretchers and transported to the hospital for heat released injuries.
As fire crews continue to battle the blaze, they are concerned about the potential for collapse of the old home because the fire has been burning for such a long time already.
SCE&G crews are also on the scene attempting to cut the gas line by digging up nearby sidewalk. Officials say it would take about two hours before they are able to access and cut that line.
This is a developing story. We will continue to update this story on air and online.
