Flu Claims Life of Hanahan High School Student
HANAHAN, SC (WTAT-TV) — A junior at Hanahan High School who died from flu complications will be laid to rest today. A funeral service is planned for 18-year-old Emily Getman at 2:00pm today in the J. Henry Stur Northwoods Chapel on Greenridge Road.
Getman will then be laid to rest at Riverview Memorial Park. The funeral home says memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The 18-year-old junior passed away on April 12th after battling influenza. Officials tell us she was being treated at MUSC when she died last week.
A DHEC report, released Friday, shows there have been 59 deaths in South Carolina this year due to complications from the flu. There were only 39 such deaths last year.
Getman was honored at Monday night’s baseball game against Goose Creek following the National Anthem. There was a moment of silence and her initials were painted behind home plate where players prayed with the visiting Goose Creek team before the game.
Hanahan’s principal, Ric Raycroft says the school is a close knit community and everyone will miss her. “Emily was one of our students, one of our friends, one of our Hanahan children. We love her, will miss her and will never forget her.”
