Groups to Hold Anti-Bannon Rally, Traffic to be Impacted
CHARLESTON, SC (BRODIE HART, WTAT-TV) — Controversial former White House adviser Steve Bannon is set to speak at The Citadel tonight, an event that is sure to have an impact on and around the campus.
Bannon will be speaking at the sold out event in which he was invited by the Citadel Republican Society.
Along with those attending tonight’s Patriot Dinner, protestors will be set up across the street rallying against Bannon’s visit.
“One of the primary reasons that we are coming together for this rally is because of the fact that Steve Bannon stands for a lot of things that are not, as far as I’m concerned, American,” said Pastor Thomas Dixon. “He is a divisive force in America because he disrespects women, stands against our LGBT community, all immigrants, muslims and hispanics.”
Dixon went on to say “Our African-American community here in Charleston was disrespected by him two weeks after Mother Emanuel by posting in Breitbart an article praising the Confederate battle flag which we know was instrumental in Dylann Roof’s ideology that led to the murders.”
Dixson says the protesters will be coming together for a peaceful rally with all of the afore mentioned groups represented. “We will be speaking across the street from the perspective of unity, of how we as a diverse nation come together, stand together and move forward. We have no opposition to free speech whatsoever – as a matter of fact, as far as me and my group, we’ll fight for free speech until we can’t fight anymore and we’ll win. But as far as The Citadel motto – duty, honor, respect – the community right now feels it has been disrespected by inviting this person to speak.”
“We’re equal opportunity – we did the same thing when we stood up against the Black Panthers Party in the aftermath of Mother Emanuel when they came here,” he said. “They came here, as far as we perceived, to be divisive also. We are not going to tolerate that in our community and we will stand up against it. In the end, we will win.”
Steve Bannon is expected to speak at The Citadel’s Holliday Alumni Center for the Republican Society’s Patriot Dinner. The event begins at 6:00 p.m.
The event could impact you even if you do not plan on attending the dinner or rally. Citadel officials will close Hagood Avenue from Fishburne Street to Congress from 3:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m.
Congress to Huger Streets will close at 4:00 p.m. as well.
All parking on Hagood will be unavailable starting at 2:00 p.m. Any cars left there could be towed.
We will have the evry latest from today’s event on FOX 24 News at 6:30 p.m and 10:00p.m. as well as online.
