ORANGEBURG, SC (WTAT-TV) — South Carolina State University will gather Thursday to commemorate a somber anniversary — 50 years since the Orangeburg Massacre.

Samuel Hammond Jr., Henry Smith, and Delano Middleton were shot and killed by police after being involved in a protest over a segregated bowling alley.

More than 30 others were injured during that protest including former State Representative Bakari Sellers father, Cleveland Sellers.

The former state lawmaker will be the keynote speaker inside the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.
