Mail Reported Stolen in Mount Pleasant
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WTAT-TV) — A rash of mail thefts in several Mount Pleasant neighborhoods has people concerned. Homeowners have reported both incoming and outgoing mail being stolen.
These areas include Charleston National, Dunes West and Brickyard Plantation.
We spoke to one mail theft victim who said he had no idea someone had stolen his mail at first. Everything looked perfectly normal, but the mail carrier showed up after his flag was down and said he had several checks stolen that took a great deal of time and energy to report and cancel.
Now, he is more cautious.
“It’s just a different world we live in when you can’t put your mail in your mailbox without thinking someone might take it other than the mail carrier. But, the reality is that is the world we live in,” he said. “In the future, I won’t put any outgoing mail in the mailbox.”
The U.S. Postal Service is a federal agency and mail theft is considered a federal crime with significant prison time and fines handed down to offenders.
Right now, police say they are still looking for suspects.
