ST. STEPHEN, SC (WTAT-TV) – Officials with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday arrested a man accused of assaulting and robbing the pastor of Saint Mary’s Holiness Church in St. Stephen.

According to a police report, Pastor Sandy Wilson Jr., stepped outside the church to help a man that did not know how to change a tire.

That is when the man, later identified as 33-year-old Hector Gibbs, grabbed the pastor, threw him to the ground and attempted to grab a wallet from the victim’s pocket.

Other church members came outside to help, but Gibbs ran to the road to catch a ride.

The suspect was later apprehended by officers in St. Stephen and was transported to the Hill Finklea Detention Center.

Gibbs has been charged with strong arm robbery and is awaiting a bond hearing.
