Man Charged in Death of 11-Year-Old Girl
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — A driver accused of hitting and killing an 11-year-old Danish girl remains behind bars.
Jeffery Wakefield, 30, was denied bond in court Tuesday afternoon.
Police charged him with felony DUI and reckless homicide.
Investigators say he hit Selma Akguel near Cannon Park Monday night.
A makeshift memorial was set up Tuesday in her honor.
Ryan Glushkoff lives in the area and says accidents like this happen far too often.
“You can’t stop people from drinking and driving and/or driving under the influence and making poor decisions,” he said. “But there are some preventive measures that can be taken to at least minimize the number of accidents.”
City leaders say they are working to add crosswalks and other methods of pedestrian protection to the area.
