Man Who Recently Became U.S. Citizen Casts First Ballot
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WTAT-TV) — People across the Lowcountry went to the polls on Tuesday, but the moment was extra special for one local voter.
Robi Dos Santos grew up in Brazil and made his way to the United States over 20 years ago.
He was recently granted citizenship back in April, so this was his first U.S. election.
Dos Santos also owns a business here in the Charleston area and says the current political climate drove him to the polls.
“I really wanted to be part of a change,” he said. “I really felt like I wanted to have the right to participate more in the democratic society. It is the American dream.”
He says he is thrilled to participate in something he’s wanted to do for the last twenty years.
