NAN Address Blackface At The Citadel
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) – The Citadel is now addressing Blackface in school yearbooks. This stems from multiple cases nationwide.
The National Action Network visited the college on Monday, February 11th, to address the issue.
Leaders say the goal is to bridge the gaps in understanding and provide more opportunities for minority cadets.
Elder James Johnson of the National Action Network stated, “What we want to do is not remove history, but put a lid on that docket. The Citadel’s name still offends blacks in Charleston, so we want a good relationship with the president of the college.”
Citadel leaders have acknowledged racially offensive photos in past yearbooks. They say the images in no way represent the current life of cadets. The military college plans to continue looking forward, rather than back.
