New Home for Homeless Vets Opens in North Charleston
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — Patriot Villas will hold a grand opening event on Friday to showcase new housing for homeless veterans.
That organization says it has teamed up with the Veteran’s Administration to bring 74 rooms to a remodeled hotel, each including a full bathroom, kitchen and air conditioning.
The center will also offer a laundromat, rec facility and support groups.
“I had a brother in the service who passed away while trying to figure out how to access benefits due for his service with the Navy. After his passing I got a letter from the Veteran’s Administration saying he was now qualified for 100% disability. Too little, too late. So I started working with different local government agencies and put this process together of how we could reach out to those less fortunate than ourselves and this concept came alive,” said Bill Wiley, manager for Patriot Villas. “It has taken me about four years to find the funding and so forth.”
Wiley said they completed the project without any government grants or financial support.
Patriot Villas is located off Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. Mayor Keith Summey is expected to be in attendance.
