Breast Cancer Awareness: MUSC Offers Tips for Signs & Prevention

CHARLESTON, SC (FOX 24 NEWS NOW) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today we spoke with Dr. Andrea Abbott, a surgical oncologist at MUSC, about early detection and prevention.

There are more than three million women living with breast cancer right now. Of those, forty thousand are expected to lose the fight.

There are several different types of breast cancer including, Stage 0-4, inflammatory breast cancer,recurrent breast cancer, and triple-negative breast cancer.

According to breastcancer.org, in 2018, an estimated 266, 120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are to be in women, and another 2,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2018.

Several factors can contribute to your risk including drinking alcohol and being overweight, among others.

Early detection has played a key role in lowering the mortality rate attributed to this life-changing disease.
