CHARLESTON, SC (FOX 24 NEWS NOW) — Believe it or not, summertime will quickly come to a close and the Lowcountry will usher in a new school year.

But, we do still have a few weeks to go.

Before we head back to the classroom, a special ‘fill the bus’ fundraiser will collect school supplies for students across the area through an organization called the ‘Progressive Initiative’.

It’s a program that aims to strengthen the African-American community’s confidence in black-owned or black-run businesses.

“We wanted to be able to do something to send our kids back to school the right way,” said organizer Kimberly Bowman. “In a lot of underserved communities, kids don’t have access to school supplies, they may not have transportation to go to events that may give out supplies for free, so we’re going to bring the supplies to them.”

The group will collect school supply donations all summer long at various drop-off points.
