Keeping Your Pets Safe from the Storm
CHARLESTON, SC (FOX 24 NEWS NOW) — With Irma churning in the Atlantic, it’s especially important to keep our fur babies safe.
Kay Hyman with the Charleston Animal Society says you should prepare, plan and stay tuned because you never know what is going to happen with the storm or if they will announce a mandatory evacuation.
If they do, she says you need to make sure your plan includes your pets. “You want to make sure you have all of their medications, supplies, food and water, everything you would have for yourself plus items like a litter box or scoopy bags for your dog.”
Those who evacuate, Hyman says you should take your pets with you. “If you have to stay there is an emergency shelter for people and their pets which will be set up on Leeds Avenue. But honestly, it is a last resort place to go to and use. It’s not a hotel – it is bare bones.”
If you do stay at a hotel during evacuations, Hyman says you can go online and look for pet-friendly locations. There is no law that says hotels have to open up to you if they do not normally allow pets.
