CHARLESTON, SC (FOX 24 NEWS NOW) — He’s teaming up with local nonprofits to empower the Holy City’s women and it’s a stunning affair!

Jacob Taylor is the founder of the Lady of Charleston Pageant, an event that creates bonds through the power of confidence, leadership and sisterhood.

“I started this because I’m a lover of fashion, thanks to my mom, and the second reason is that I’m an advocate of fashion,” he explained. “The way fashion is going now, it’s kind of leaving that classic chic look.”

Jacob is a wardrobe consultant and owns his business, Tailored by Taylor. “My main focus is the classic man and lady of Charleston,” he said. “I hold a couple of fashion shows, mixers and it’s all about bringing that fashion awareness to Charleston.”

Taylor believes when you look good, you feel good. “You are more confident about yourself. You are not second guessing, you feel confident about what you believe and what you are talking about.”

That plays a role in why he started the Lady of Charleston Pageant, which is about fashion and how you present yourself.

When it comes to contestants, Taylor says he looks for leadership qualities. In 2016, Yvette Packer was the inaugural winner of the Lady of Charleston Pageant.

Packer works for a government agency that deals with at risk youth in the community. She says it’s important that she present herself as a leading lady with dignity, respect and integrity.

As a woman, she feels leadership is lacking in up-and-coming generations. “It seems as if young ladies do not have much self respect, self esteem, and they are attention seeking,” she said. “That is very troubling, so it is very important that we teach young ladies now how to represent themselves as a respectable woman.”

In working with at-risk youth, Packer tries to instill the importance of loving themselves in the younger generation to help develop their self esteem. “You have to love yourself. In order for someone else to love you, you have to love yourself first and respect yourself if you want respect.”

She says you also have to be responsible for your own life choices, all of which are fundamental in life.

The Lady of Charleston Pageant will take place on Sunday, October 8th at the Charleston Music Hall (37 John Street). Doors for the event open at 5:00 p.m. and the show begins promptly at 6:00 p.m.
