North Charleston Convention Center Open as Cold Shelter
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — Shelters across the Lowcountry are open today including the largest shelter in North Charleston.
The American Red Cross has set up shelter at the North Charleston Convention Center. They say that shelter will stay open as long as necessary.
Leaders say the shelter is open to anyone regardless of where you live.
“You don’t have to be from a certain zip code, everybody is welcome at the shelter at the North Charleston Convention Center,” said Louise Welch Williams, regional CEO with the Red Cross.
“We encourage people, if you don’t have heat in your house, if you are afraid your pipes are going to break, if you are alone, want a safe place to stay, that is why we’ve opened the shelter,” she continued.
Keep in mind that only service animals are permitted at this shelter, no everyday pets.
People with pets can take them to the shelter on Leeds Avenue.
There will also be no transportation provided. The Convention Center will provide cots, blankets, food, water and comfort items for anyone in need.
