Police Warn About Thieves Posing as Landscapers, Breaking Into Homes
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — We have a new scam alert to warn you about. Charleston police say two senior citizens had their homes broken into while they were in the backyard.
Investigators say a man told the victims he worked for a company called ‘Green Thumb,’ and that he was interested in trimming the trees in their backyard.
After thirty minutes of talking, the man said he has to take a phone call and left.
Officers say nearly $2,000 is missing between the two victims along with guns.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office believes the cases are connected. “Don’t hesitate to ask for identification. Find out who they are working for and why they are there. You can ask that through a screen door or just pop your door open a little bit before actually going outside with them,” said CCSO Detective Tim McCauley.
Officials say one theft happened on Maybank Highway and the other on Ashley River Road.
You are asked to call police or Crime Stoppers if you have noticed anything suspicious in your neighborhood.
