NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) — North Charleston police responded to a reported shooting inside Northwoods Mall Monday afternoon.

FOX 24’s Tim Renaud was heading into Planet Fitness around 5:30 p.m. when he saw many people running and walking out of the mall. Many saying “don’t go inside, people are shooting” and “there were shots fired”.

Renaud said there were no police or signs of police activity which lead him to believe there was a serious situation, but more people began to run out of the mall announcing shots fired.

About 5 minutes later you could hear the sound of police vehicles racing to the scene.

A North Charleston police officer pulled up to the entrance between Belk and Planet Fitness and began to quickly suit up and ran into the mall. More officers quickly arrived and followed.

As there parking lot began to fill with spectators and people who evacuated the mall, so did the police presence and a helicopter unit quickly followed.

Public Information officer Spencer Pryor confirmed to FOX 24’s Bill Burr shortly after that it was not an active shooting situation.

However, he did confirm that two people began to argue inside a store at Northwoods Mall. An employee of the store asked for the parties to leave and they moved into a common area. That is when the fight escalated and both drew their guns and shots were fired.

Both suspects are currently on the run, and there were no reports of immediate injuries.

We have since learned that a woman was injured as she rushed out of the mall, she was treated for a scraped leg.

Northwoods Mall will remain closed for the evening and will reopen Tuesday.

This is a developing story. We will continue to bring you the very latest.
