Route to Change for Mount Pleasant Christmas Parade
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (CAROLINE BALCHUNAS, WTAT-TV) — About 5,000 attend Mount Pleasant’s beloved Christmas parade every year. But this year, things will be a little different – the route is changing and will head in a different direction. Some people say the news is a big disappointment.
The annual Christmas lights parade route is shifting west and will run from Mill Street down to Patriots Point Road.
Mount Pleasant town officials say construction along Coleman Boulevard is to blame.
“We normally full staff on that day,” said Emily Ross, a longtime server at Wild Wings Café. “We just have extra people on staff for extra hands in case people need to be directed to the restroom, just getting drinks, coming inside to warm up since it’s generally cold that day.”
Ross says they look forward to the Christmas parade every year, but the new route cuts them out.
“It’s a family affair, so moving it from this part of town where the meat of the Old Village, where the meat of Mount Pleasant is able to connect is just going to change the entire dynamic for us moving from Shem Creek up to Patriots Point.”
Wild Wings is usually in the heart of the action with ample parking to match.
The manager says the changes are bad for business because the parade is their biggest money maker of the year.
For servers like Emily, it means potentially less money in her pocket.
That day is normally a trophy day for us,” she said. “We’re normally walking away with $200 to $300 that day for an evening shift. It’s definitely a good money maker right here before the holidays, so we really rely on it.”
She hopes the new route is only temporary.
The change also means the Coleman Boulevard off-ramp for the Ravenel Bridge will also be temporarily shut down beginning at 5:00 p.m., diverting all traffic to Highway 17.
This year’s parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 10th.
Whilden St. to Pherigo St. will close at 4:00 p.m. for the lineup and Whilden St. to Patriots Point Rd. will close at 5:00 p.m.
Patriots Point Rd. from Coleman Blvd. to Harry Hallman Blvd. will close at 5:00 p.m.
