COLUMBIA, SC (WTAT-TV) — Two South Carolina-based fighter pilots were honored for their role in saving 88 soldiers in Afghanistan.

Captains John Nygard and Salvador Cruz were awarded Distinguished Flying Cross Medals at Shaw Air Force Base over the weekend.

Nygard and Cruz helped save the lives of soldiers who were surrounded by attacking forces in April of 2017.

The pair flew their F-16 fighter jets to the battle where they targeted the enemy insurgents.

Two American soldiers were killed in the battle with Islamic State or other militants.
