Sen. Tim Scott Introduces Children’s Identity Theft Bill
COLUMBIA, SC (WTAT-TV) — South Carolina Senator Tim Scott wants to introduce a bill aimed at protecting children from identity theft.
The Senator made the announcement on his website Tuesday and cited a recent study that says one in every ten children have had their social security numbers stolen to open bank accounts or credit card accounts, begativly impacting their credit before then even become adults.
“It is simply inconceivable that a criminal would seek to exploit a child’s identity and personal information for their own financial gain, and we must look to utilize all of our resources to stop these crimes from continuing to negatively impact our families,” said Scott in a press release. “This upgrade to Social Security Administration procedure is a commonsense and effective way to cut down on synthetic ID fraud and help prevent millions of people from having their identity stolen.”
Scott is working with senators from Louisiana, Missouri and Michigan to get the bill passed.
