State Coroners Face Dilemma on What to Do With Unclaimed Bodies
CHARLESTON, SC (WTAT-TV) – Coroners across South Carolina are facing a problem that most people don’t think about- what to do with unclaimed bodies.
The Beaufort County Coroner says that he has over sixty unclaimed bodies in a storage closet in his office.
Legally, coroners are allowed to dispose unclaimed bodies after thirty days.
Jasper County Coroner, Martin Sauls, says that is not hoe he likes to handle them. “I know I would appreciate someone holding a member of my family until I could find out about it, locate them and claim them,” he told FOX 24 News.
