Suspect Arrested After Shooting, Standoff on James Island
JAMES ISLAND, SC (BRODIE HART, WTAT-TV) — A man has been arrested after firing his gun at a neighbor during an argument and barricading himself inside a home on the 1300 block of Camp Road.
Both SWAT and Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies were called in to negotiate with the suspect who was holed up inside his home for about 5 hours, but never got a response.
Officials believe the man may have passed out because he was drunk and on pain medications.
Authorities say the shot was fired at a woman, but we are told the bullet went into the ground, no one was injured.
Tear gas was later fired into the home through a window causing several loud pops in addition to the original gun shot. That is when law enforcement then arrested the suspect after he surrendered without putting up a fight.
Sheriff Al Cannon was also on the scene and said this was not the first time they have been called out to this house. “We have been around here, about the middle of August, on a domestic type situation. Put the alcohol and potential of pain medication in there together and you have a situation that got out of hand,” he said.
Sheriff Cannon said the suspect was decontaminated from exposure to the pepperspray by EMS and placed in handcuffs. He was later identified as Kristopher L. Upchurch.
Upchurch is now facing several charges including pointing and presenting a firearm. He is expected in bond court Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
