Wando Bridge Shut Down as SC DOT Makes Emergency Repairs
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WTAT-TV) — Officials with the South Carolina Department of Transportation on Monday announced an emergency closure of the I-526 westbound bridge over the Wando River.
Initial reports of road closures came in around 2:20 p.m. when officer Chip Googe of the Mount Pleasant Police Department said 526 westbound traffic was being diverted to Longpoint Road due to emergency repairs.
SCDOT later released information which said the emergency closure was ordered by engineers because of a snapped cable inside the bridge structure.
“An immediate assessment and repair plan is being developed for the structure,” said the announcement.
SCDOT officials say they are working closely with local law enforcement agencies on detours.
“SCDOT apologizes for the significant inconvenience this closure will have on mobility in the region and will expedite our assessment and repairs accordingly,” the statement continued.
