Wando Welch Terminal Cleared After Threat of ‘Dirty Bomb’
MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WTAT-TV) — The all-clear has been given at Mount Pleasant’s Wando Welch Terminal following reports of a ‘dirty bomb’ aboard the Maersk cargo ship ‘Memphis’.
The U.S. Coast Guard said they scanned and searched containers during a 7-hour investigation which posed the threat. They say nothing was found and there were no existing threats to the port.
Coast Guard officials say they received the threat shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday about a possible ‘dirty bomb’ aboard that cargo ship from a so-called “YouTube conspiracy theorist.”
The threat caused a mass evacuation of about 200 people for safety precautions.
Authorities say the person who made the claims has been detained for questioning.
