Warming Shelters Opening Due to Freezing Temperatures

CHARLESTON, SC (BRODIE HART, WTAT-TV) — Freezing temperatures are putting Lowcountry warming shelters to work this week with plenty more planning to open across the area.

The warming shelters are meant to help out those who cannot afford to heat their homes or those who may sleep outside.

At these shelters, you can expect to find a warm place to sleep as well as dinner and breakfast.

    NORTH CHARLESTON:

Charleston Area Convention Center
5008 Coliseum Drive

The American Red Cross will open a warming shelter at the for anyone who needs to escape the cold. The shelter will open at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
This shelter will offer cots, blankets, food, water and comfort. You are reminded to bring personal comforts like medications, bedding, blankets, pillows, personal hygiene items and a change of clothes.

    MOUNT PLEASANT:

Hibben United Methodist Church
690 Coleman Blvd.

This shelter will be open January 2nd and 3rd beginning at 7:00 a.m. – all guests must leave the shelter by 7:00 p.m. each day.

There will be a bus picking up residents at the following locations in downtown Charleston:
– Huger Street across from Taco Boy
– Marion Square at King Street
– Main Library on Calhoun Street

Guests will be returned to those locations the next morning.

    GOOSE CREEK:

Goose Creek United Methodist Church
142 Redbank Rd.

This shelter will be open January 3rd from 7:00 p.m until 7:00 a.m.

This shelter will be open January 2nd from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m.

Ridge Baptist Church
2168 Ridge Church Rd.

This shelter will be open January 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th from 7:00 p.m. until 7:30 a.m.
