SHALLOTTE, NC (WTAT-TV) — Have you ever wondered how alligators deal with freezing temperatures?

Gators in North Carolina’s Shallotte River Swap Park were seen sticking their noses through the ice to survive.

There are currently 12 alligators hibernating there in the ice.

They lower their body temperature and metabolism under water to survive while keeping their snouts above water level.
