CHARLESTON, SC (FOX 24 NEWS NOW) – It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since we welcomed the Gunn family to FOX24 News Now.

Hollis Gunn and his wife Julie came on to talk about their beautiful daughter, Makayla.

Makayla has a rare genetic disorder called Rett’s syndrome that affects approximately 1/10,000 females.

Girls with Rett syndrome experience normal development until 6-18 months, followed by a period of developmental regression.

The features of Rett syndrome typically include intellectual disability, seizures, absent or reduced speech, and stereotypical hand movements, as well as breathing and digestive issues.

Hollis and Makayla, along with Dr. Mike Lyons, director of clinical services for Greenwood Genetic Center, joined us in-studio to talk about a special Race for the Helix event coming up this weekend.
