No Luck Winning the Lottery?
ST. GEORGE, S.C (WTAT-TV) – ANNABELLE PAPE
Dorchester Treasure, Cindy Chitty wants to help county residents search for unclaimed property being held by the state. Thursday, June 20, from 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM Treasurer Chitty and County Staff will be set up on Little Main Street in front of Hutchinson Square in downtown Summerville.
Currently, there is more than $650 million in unclaimed property across the state and more than $11 million due to residents, businesses and organizations in Dorchester County. Unclaimed property can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten utility deposits, unclaimed insurance proceeds, and stocks. The State Treasurer’s Office serves as custodian of these funds until they are properly claimed.
State Treasurer, Curtis Loftis said “we appreciate the efforts of Treasurer Chitty and her staff to raise awareness about our Unclaimed Property Program. I constantly tell people you have better odds to find unclaimed property than win the lottery, and it’s a free service — no ticket required.”
Residents not able to attend the June Third Thursday event can visit the State Treasurer’s website to look up their names and file claims online.
